چکیده

In natural communication, humans enrich their utterances with pragmatic information indicating, e.g., what is important to them or what they are not certain about. We investigate whether and how virtual humans (VH) can employ this kind of meta-communication. In an empirical study we have identified three modifying functions that humans produce and perceive in multimodal utterance, one being to create or attenuate focus. In this paper we test whether such modifying functions are also observed in speech and/or gesture of a VH, and whether this changes the perception of a VH overall. Results suggest that, although the VH’s behaviour is judged rather neutral overall, focusing is distinctively recognised, leads to better recall, and affects perceived competence. These effects are strongest if focus is created jointly by speech and gesture.

Unification-based Multimodal Integration

Recent empirical research has shown conclusive advantages of multimodal interaction over speech-only interaction for mapbased tasks. This paper describes a multimodal language processing architecture which supports interfaces allowing simultaneous input from speech and gesture recognition. Integration of spoken and gestural input is driven by unification of typed feature structures representing...

Timing of visual and spoken input in robot instructions

Trainable robots will need to understand instructions by humans who combine speech and gesture. This paper reports on the analysis of speech and gesture events in a corpus of human-to-human instructions of the dealing phase of a card game. Such instructions constitute an almost uninterrupted stream of words and gestures. One the task of a multimodal robot interface is to determine which gesture...

Multimodal content representation for speech and gesture production

This paper presents a computational perspective on the joint production process for speech and gesture. Based on empirical evidence indicating a mutual influence of speech and gesture in utterance production, we propose an interface between imagistic and propositional knowledge at the level of content representation. This is integrated into a generation architecture in which the planning of con...

Perception of 'speech-and-gesture2 integration

This paper describes two experiments conducted to identify the role of synchronization in the perception of ‘speech and gesture’ communication and to isolate the parameters that determine the perception of temporal alignment. The results of the first experiment show that the synchronization between audio and visual signals determines the felicitousness of a multimodal utterance. With the second...
